Upton Housing Project based in South Elmsall
Project Details
- Year Built: 2023
- Project Size: 22 two and three bedroom houses
- Location: Pontefract
- Client: Mears Group and Wakefield District Housing
Working collaboratively with Mears Group and Wakefield District Housing on their site at Field Lane in Upton, Pontefract, this £3m contract delivered 22 two and three bed houses on another brownfield site that used to be a retirement home.
Another housing project with sustainability at the heart of its programme. Revitalising this brownfield area, a former Sheltered Housing Complex, brings forth a host of benefits that extend beyond just economic considerations. The repurposing of this site has reduced the pressure on greenfield spaces, breathed new life into the site, and contributed to community engagement and social cohesion.
The site will also serve to honour Rifleman Luke Farmer, who was sadly killed in action in 2010, with a new street on this affordable housing estate being named after him.
Luke grew up in Upton, Pontefract and joined the Army’s 3rd Battalion, The Rifles, in 2008. After completing basic training, Luke was deployed to Afghanistan but was sadly killed on 15 January 2010 whilst on patrol, aged just 19. The new street, off Field Lane, Upton, Pontefract, will be known as Luke Farmer Way. Some of the houses have also been named after Luke’s regiment to further commemorate him.
